This site has long been known from the Bible (John 1:28 and 10:40) and from the Byzantine and medieval texts. The area is part of the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and Mount Nebo.

Bethany Beyond the Jordan is located half an hour by car from Amman. It is situated in the Jordan River Valley, which is the Holy Land where God gave his Ten Commandments to Moses, and where John baptized Jesus. The history of the Jordan River Valley around the Dead Sea goes back to the Book of Genesis, and it is believed to be the location of the Garden of Eden.

Bethany Beyond the Jordan has great appeal to visitors and has been authenticated by all major Christian Church leaders as one of the three holiest sites of Christianity. The site is also situated in a Nature Reserve, with much flora and fauna.
